Hiking Etiquette for Hiking with Bear Bells
Hey I had a surprising experience yesterday and now I'm wondering if it is rude to hike with a bear bell on.
For more context, I was hiking by myself in an area with very high black bears activities. I had bear spray on me but really didn't want to use it. I also had a mini cow bell with me that was quite loud. I talked to the rangers before I hit the trail and asked if I should use the bell for the trail, and they told me that I should totally use it. I tightened the bell on my backpack and put it in my pocket to mute it when I saw people. When I was hiking, I had people tell me that it is unnecessary to use the bell and it annoys them. I also ran into a mother and son pair in the parking lot that the mom wanted to take out her bell and the son told her to put it away. So now I'm wondering if it is considered rude to use a bell while hiking. I only use it when I do solo hikes on weekdays.
