Shocking but Not a Shock

George Washington was the commander in chief of the Continental Army which fought for American independence from 1775-1783, he then presided over the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and was elected as the first President of the United States in 1789. He is widely viewed by scholars as one of, if not the, greatest American President.

He was also a rich Virginia planter and slave owner. While he had no direct children of his own he had a very large extended family - nearly all of whom sided with Virginia and the Confederacy when the Civil War broke out in 1861.

Among the members of Washington's extended family to turn traitor:

Robert E. Lee married Washington's granddaughter (through marriage) Mary Curtis

Lewis W Washing & James B Washington - who were descendants of George's brother Augustine.

John A Washington III, Richard B Washington, Bushrod C Washington II AND James Washington who were all descended from another of George's brothers (in this Case James A. Washington I)
