We’re planning a 2 week road trip in Sicily at the start/mid-September this year.
Looking at the itinerary and our interests, I'm wondering if the below would make sense:
Itinerary 1 focuses on the West side of the island:
Days 1-3: Fly to Catania - we wouldn't want to spend too much time in Catania unless it's recommended? We are considering driving to Taormina and spending a couple of days there, including hiking Etna.
Days 4-6: Cefalu and Parco delle Madonie - we love hiking so a couple of strolls in the Madonie would be great but I am not sure whether it won't be too scorching hot mid-September?
Day 7: Agrigento
Day 8-12: Trapani, Favigniana, Castellmare del Goflo - haven't decided where to base ourselves, but beach/sea time. Any recommendations for a quiet place/beach? :)
Days 14-16: Palermo and fly back home
Alternatively, I've been looking at a more rushed trip incorporating the Eastern part:
Days 1-2: Fly to Catania - Taormina + Etna
Days 3-6: Drive to Ragusa and base ourselves there for 4 days. Visit Syracuse, Noto, Modica, etc
Day 7: Agrigento
Days 8-9: Cefalu + Madonie
Days 10-13: Trapani, Favigniana, Castellmare del Goflo
Days 14-15: Palermo
Day 16: Fly back home
It makes most sense for us to fly to Catania, but we can leave either from Palermo (that would steal a day) or Catania (but that means doubling up on ourselves), so I'm not sure if that makes any difference.
We have been to Italy many, many times, speak some Italian, would rent a car, and are comfortable driving in the South (haven't tried that in Sicily, though! :)). We are very much into nature, hiking, and adventure, but also good food and a stroll through the town or simply a few days to just relax. We're not really into crowds and generally prefer a small town in Italy, but we don't mind spending a few days here and there in bigger cities.
I would really appreciate your help since we're about to leave in less than 2 weeks! :) #travel
