YSK: that if you are a parent with children you should only manually approve YouTube videos.
Why YSK?: This has been probably talked about a lot from other people but I want to sort of re-update people on this topic. I had just recently watched two notable videos on the topic of My Little Pony creepypastas. I should link them here but I do want to tell you that you probably shouldn't watch them if you find certain things disturbing.
https://youtu.be/aNl4es8_Lvs So one of the videos is about how we traumatize an entire generation and the other is talking about these sins of bronies.
I want to tell you that the majority of bronies which are adult men and women and young male children who watch the show My Little Pony, are totally fine. They are innocent. They are okay but unfortunately there is a subsection of the internet that takes these shows and adds really creepy elements to them and then they don't even warn people about the creepiness. They don't warn them and try to make sure as much as possible that children aren't going to accidentally come across it.
They don't have anything in the title that indicates this or anything. This is incredibly bad and if you think that it is something that is just sort of unfortunate but isn't going to lead to massive problems, I thought the same thing. I thought that children shouldn't watch this kind of stuff but I didn't think that it was actually going to hurt them so badly. One child got hospitalized. Okay so in one of the videos which I believe is the second one it talks about how this one girl ended up watching some really creepy scary gory stuff. They got addicted to that kind of stuff and they got addicted to the grotesque and even sexual things that they were seeing but they didn't want to tell anyone because they were afraid that they wouldn't be seen as normal so they kept it to themselves. They got a sex addiction at the age of 6 years old.
So what about the parents? How could they let this happen? Well unfortunately some of the videos that have these really creepy elements look very innocent. They're not very obvious all the time. There's this one for example that features the fan fiction cupcakes for example and it looks pretty innocent because the thumbnail looks so innocent and the title looks so innocent but it is not innocent.
Parents who simply judge a video based off of the thumbnail are going to be disappointed.
You have to watch the video all the way through to make sure that it's safe or just make absolute sure that it an entire channel is safe. Don't be afraid to ask the internet if a certain channel is completely safe. People want to protect children.
Not only do people who look at sexual content at a very young age become depressed or anxious but they run the risk of also having body issues as the images that they see sometimes in porn are completely unrealistic based off of models that have achieved unnatural or extremely unhealthy or impossible figures. This leads to children getting eating disorders because they are incredibly self-conscious. It also leads them to have misconceptions and a misrepresentation of what it means to be a man, a woman, and how to treat someone of the opposite gender.
This can't lead to misogynistic views of people especially women because people absorb this they don't understand that that is not real and therefore they carry these views over into how they treat others in the future.
The thing is is that we let children watch Harry Potter because we know and we can tell them that Harry Potter isn't real but they don't understand that the same thing applies to sexual content on the internet.
Children should not be exposed to sexual or extremely violent content as a young child and when they get older as they start get more of the internet They need to be able to have the tools necessary to discern these things on their own and to be able to know that some things depicted on the internet are not real.
Look I'm not going to be the kind of person that will say that the internet should just be off limits to children. I use the internet when I was little but it was done in such a way that protected me. For example I had a computer but it was a shared computer with the rest of the family so I had to wait my turn. It was also in the living room so my parents could sort of see what I was watching. Also YouTube wasn't really a thing at the time. So I was just playing a bunch of flash games and it was really fun. And I think that children eventually need to learn how to navigate the internet in a safe way not only for the fact that there's gore and violence and sex but also just to prevent them from downloading malware.
The internet should be in combination with good parenting and the internet is not a substitution for good parenting.
Learn to whitelist. Whitelisting is the process of approving videos or websites manually. You can actually approve websites and videos on YouTube kids which is something that people are a little confused by. Okay so a video marked for kids isn't the same as YouTube kids. It's a little different. The reason why something is marked for kids is so that their data isn't grabbed. They can't grab the info data off of a video that is watched that is marked for kids. This is a little different than YouTube kids which is something people are a little confused by.
Going to YouTube kids and manually approve videos and channels. You can do this.
For example if they want to watch the next Arthur they can do that.
By the way I am referring to children below the age of 13.
There was a brony con. If you don't know what that is it's basically just a convention for the fans of My Little Pony and it is for all ages. People bring their children for example. Sometimes these places will have -13 areas meaning that they are for people below the age of 13. So people would go in there along with their parents and they would see panels of their favorite voice actors playing their favorite characters and then a child asks
About princess moelestia. You don't know what that is it's a sexualized version of princess Celestia which is a character in the TV show. No not the sexual one the normal one. The normal ones in the TV show, the sexual ones online.
The voice actors was absolutely horrified. What are you supposed to do?
TLDR: please for f sake please just please manually approve videos and YouTube kids actually has an option to manually approve videos or entire channels that are safe.
