My son just turned 13 and my daughter is 10. They’re healthy, good kids, and I’m incredibly proud of who they’re becoming. But lately I’ve been absolutely haunted by how much I miss the little versions of them.
The endless cuddles, the tiny hands reaching for me, the way they’d get so excited about everything, calling me “Daddy” in that high-pitched voice… It hits me heard especially with Google Photos memory that put reminder of old videos and photos and just aching. I never expected this wave to hit me so hard. I don’t want them to grow up too quickly. There are days I genuinely wish I could turn back time, even just for a little while.
I know this is normal, and I know I should be grateful for the present and the years we still have. But the feeling is heavy. I'm a male and literally been crying at night quietly these past three days and feeling very vulnerable—as a father, and as a man who feels he should be strong. It’s like I’m grieving a version of our life that’s quietly slipping away. I still do a lot with them — dad dates, game nights, etc. — but it feels different now. The innocence and dependence of the early years is gone and I’m struggling with that.
Fellow dads (and parents), how long does this intense nostalgia last? How did you move through it without letting it steal the joy from the current stage? Did you do anything that helped you create new “magic” with your teenagers or pre-teens? Any advice or even just “I felt exactly this” would mean a lot right now.
I feel a deep sense of regret for spending all these years chasing my career and being constantly busy with work—and if I could turn back time, I would choose differently.
Thanks for reading. Just needed to get it off my chest.
