Gatekeeping your favorite hobby/band/place/event etc. is…

Gatekeeping your favorite hobby/band/place/event etc. is totally fine, and actually I would encourage it.

I’m almost 40 years old, and I have seen the same exact thing happen every.single.time something gains mainstream traction. Prices increase and the vibes become worse. A mainstream level of popularity brings attention every idiot in the general public, and they inevitably make things worse. There are no exceptions to this rule, in my experience. I would love somebody to bring up an example that refutes my point.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to keep the vibes and price point of your favorite thing from changing too drastically. It may sound obnoxious and elitist to outsiders, but it’s perfectly understandable. Not everything needs to cater to the widest audience possible.

Prices jump and the room gets worse once something blows up, that part tracks. The part that doesn't is treating every new person like the one who ruins it. Some scenes die from staying closed, not from being found. A local show that never lets anyone new in just becomes the same twelve people until it folds. Where's the line for you between protecting the vibe and starving the thing?
