If you have the resources to move to NYC or any big city…

If you have the resources to move to NYC or any big city after college, you are privileged

Most jobs after college, even those originating from a STEM degree, do not pay enough to live on your own or without roommates.

I know so many people that have moved from their parents to NYC or big cities with the help of their parents paying for it and it just makes me think most people in their 20s that make their way to the big city are from wealthy backgrounds and are financially privileged to have resources to move to wherever they want to live

I am definitely saying this out of jealousy as I want to live in a city and am currently stuck in a suburban retirement area full of old people and me needing to drive an hour just to hang out with friends

Also even if your living conditions aren’t ideal, living in NYC has so many commodities and resources that those living in the suburbs don’t get including a young and happy demographic and a multitude of activities or clubs to join

That cutoff is doing a lot of work. A first job in a big city usually means someone else is covering the gap, or three people are splitting a place and calling it independence. I keep hearing the deposit-and-first-months version, then the story turns into pure grit once the keys are in hand. Roommates change the privilege math for me, though — same bucket, or a different kind of stretch?
