Hike to Kallfossen Waterfall, Skaun, Trøndelag, Norway
Some places don't disappear overnight.
They slowly fade away until almost nobody remembers they exist.
Kallfossen is one of those places.
Years ago an old hiking trail led to this hidden waterfall in the forests of Trøndelag, Norway. Then a landslide destroyed the final section of the route. As the years passed, fallen trees, moss and dense vegetation reclaimed what remained, and eventually the trail disappeared from modern hiking maps.
When I first came here, I wasn't looking for an easy hike.
I wanted to see whether the forgotten trail still existed.
At first there were only small traces left beneath the forest. Every visit revealed another fallen tree, another section hidden by vegetation, another place where the original path had almost vanished.
Over several trips I carefully reopened the route, clearing fallen trees and dense vegetation wherever it could be done without damaging the surrounding nature. The landslide itself could not be restored, but it was possible to find a safe way around it and reconnect the final approach to the waterfall.
Standing in front of Kallfossen after following a trail that had nearly disappeared felt like discovering a forgotten place rather than simply reaching another waterfall.
Today the route has been documented and submitted for review. If approved, it may once again appear on the official Norwegian hiking maps, allowing future hikers to experience this beautiful place for themselves.
I hope this video captures not only the beauty of Kallfossen, but also a small part of its story.
Sometimes the greatest adventures begin where the map ends.
