I have a habit of not keeping in touch with friends once one of us leave a job or we no longer go to school together.
I am a 29 year old male. Growing up I had severe social anxiety. It definitely had an effect on my ability to form relationships with other people. I've also struggled with adhd, depression, and a dysfunctional home life. Despite my social difficulties, I did manage to meet people in school that I had good relationships with. As I've entered my 20's, I've been actively trying to improve my mental health. I'm happy to say that there has been improvements. I've been working in customer service for the last 7 years to get more comfortable interacting with people. I've also been in therapy.
I meet coworkers that I connect with, but when they leave the job we lose contact.
I've realized all of my relationships have been like this. I've been out of high school for 11 years, and I haven't kept in contact with anyone. I've spent 3 years in university fresh out of high school and I don't keep in touch with anyone from there. I've been working at the same job for the last 7 years and the people who move on that I liked, I am no longer in contact with.
All of my relationships tend to be situational. We have the built-in structure of having to see each other at work or in school, but once that built-in structure is gone the relationship is gone.
I've lost contact with some really cool people that I wish I would have not lost contact with. I get really lonely on the weekends and on my free time.
I want to get better at maintaining friendships with people outside of the context that brings us together. I'm considering getting more involved on social media like instagram and what not to enhance my social life. I also admit that I need to be more proactive on keeping in touch with folks that I want to remain in contact with.
Can you guys give me some advice on how I can get better with this?
