MN to NH and avoiding Chicago?

I’m driving a 26 ft Penske truck (towing a vehicle on a dolly) from St. Paul, MN to northern New Hampshire next week.

I’ve driven through Chicago highways once in my life, in an SUV. It was really difficult because of road construction and traffic and I felt like I was constantly almost in an accident.

So, I’d like to avoid experiencing the same a second time. Does anyone have a recommendation for how to avoid Chicago traffic/highways on this trip? Obviously, any alternative may take longer, and that’s okay. Going through Canada is not an option because my passenger doesn’t have a passport or REAL ID compliant id (or other clear proof of citizenship). But, I’d definitely be willing to drive further south to avoid it.

Any advice?

Updated: Update: thank you all so much for your comments and suggestions. We wound up taking the Mackinaw Bridge (which I didn’t personally find scary even a little bit), had a really nice drive, and a good trip.

The only downside was that both northeast Wisconsin and Michigan seem to be really bad places to find cat friendly hotels and I called probably a dozen the first night before I found anywhere with both a vacancy and a pet policy that allowed a cats.

Thank you all!!
