How much of your future are you sacrificing to yesterday?
The other night while traveling, I had the opportunity to sit and talk with a very talented young man. As our conversation continued, he began sharing some of the trauma he had experienced in his life and how those experiences still affect him today.
As I listened, I could see something he was struggling to recognize. He had tremendous potential, but he was allowing the memories of yesterday to interfere with the possibilities of tomorrow.
I tried to explain that his past wasn’t necessarily what was holding him back. It was the habit of mentally returning to it, reliving the pain, rehearsing the fear, and allowing those thoughts to influence how he saw himself today.
Think about that for a moment.
Sometimes we become so accustomed to carrying our pain that we begin making it part of our identity. We forget that what happened to us is not necessarily who we are.
I explained that he didn’t have to forget his past. Those experiences helped shape the resilience and strength he carries today. But there is a difference between learning from an experience and continuing to live inside it.
Our thoughts create emotions, our emotions influence our actions, and our actions produce our results. When we continuously revisit yesterday’s pain, we risk allowing it to influence today’s possibilities.
Healing isn’t pretending something never happened. It is acknowledging what happened while learning to give the present more of our attention.
Today, recognize what your past has taught you. Appreciate the strength you’ve developed. And begin choosing thoughts and actions that support the person you want to become.
Your past is part of your story, but it doesn’t have to keep writing your future.
