Hopefully this is the right place to ask but i’m a 26 yr old male from Texas and I currently work in the industrial/refinery field. I basically repair leaks within refineries to include drilling into live valves, installing engineered clamps, and a variety of other things within the craft. I’m very blessed to have been only doing this for 1 1/2 years and within that time have exceeded my supervisors expectations for myself since im pretty much already leading jobs and doing things most people who have been doing this for 3-5 years still dont have or do yet. I make very good money, last year i made about 85-95k and i have a company vehicle that has a gas card which i also dont have to pay for maintenance for either. However, we deal with very serious and dangerous chemicals at times and i just feel like i’m bringing that stuff home to my family or at time i feel that its just very dangerous to my health. Ive been thinking about joining construction which ive worked before, my father is a very knowledgable handyman and i owned a landscaping company before as well, but i wanted to get into something that pays well and will still allow me to enjoy my life, i’m not hurting for money at all but i would definitely like to make at least 80k a year within the first 3 years but i’m just not sure that at my age its even worth doing considering how much i make and how blessed i am with company vehicles and what not. What is you guys’ recommendations based on your experience in the industry? Should i possibly join a union? Should i go to trade school (im a veteran so its free)? Should i just stay in the industry i’m in now? #industry source
