⚽ European Football Clubs (EFC) reportedly told FIFA that its members could boycott future Club World Cups unless a proposed joint venture gains authority over the tournaments’ commercial and operational matters.
The Guardian reported that the warning was sent in a 31 July letter and was tied to disputes over FIFA’s now-shelved Football Forward Enterprise proposal. EFC’s position concerns future men’s and women’s editions, rather than an announced withdrawal from a scheduled competition.
The dispute highlights the leverage of European clubs in FIFA’s expanded 32-team Club World Cup. FIFA’s 2025 model offered US$1 billion in prize money to participating clubs, while 12 of the 32 places went to Europe. 💰
