Post-credits scenes went from being funny little Easter eggs or jokes that movies occasionally had, to now being mandatory sequel bait crap that rarely has a lasting impact.
I don’t know. Maybe I’m jaded or just a stick in the mud, but as a 2000s kid, I absolutely loved sticking after a movie to potentially see a post-credit scene. Usually they were funny little tid bits or bloopers. Not every movie had them, but the ones that did, you certainly remembered. It made the movie feel more genuine and unique, like “yeah we’re proud of our movie, here’s us goofing around and having a good time.”
The first sings of it being bad (that I personally noticed) was Marvel and DC. What started as cool little hints to the next movie’s plot that was maybe in every other 3 films they produced, quickly turned into “here’s the next plot BUY OUR SHIT”. Like it took away the hype of teaser trailers or promotional events. Fast forward to today, and I can’t think of any movie that uses them correctly.
I also feel like they take away from the narrative. Like imagine if after Batman Begins, you see Joker plot out his robbery of the Gotham National Bank. Completely diminishes the hype and narrative of the upcoming movie. I just wish movies weren’t so reliant on this. It went from being a nice little surprise to something people now expect to see.
