"Racial Profiling" in Design Portfolios and recruiting?

My portfolio class professor is a Korean-American l who worked at a graphic design agency in New York for about 20 years. She always told us not to make it obvious that we're Asian in our portfolios — no profile photos, and avoid projects that feel too country-specific or regional.

Her reasoning was that being perceived as Asian could hurt your chances in hiring overseas. (Or more specifically, the US.)

But looking at Behance, LinkedIn, and other portfolio/recruiting sites, that doesn’t seem to be the norm at all. MAYBE this was more true when she was working in NYC in the late ’90s and early 2000s, but in 2026, it honestly sounds pretty outdated, if not outright bullshit.

The whole class is starting to feel pretty behind the times to me, so I'm curious what people think.
