✈️ National Air Traffic Services said a software defect caused the 8 September UK air-traffic-control outage that disrupted travel for hundreds of thousands of passengers.
The preliminary account says flight data was corrupted within a millisecond while an aircraft-code request was being processed. NATS said those codes identify flights on radar.
A repeat failure led to a major incident, manual controller tasks and flight restrictions. Full operations resumed at 7:30 p.m., but aircraft displacement and congestion left disruption lasting more than two days.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has asked the Civil Aviation Authority to independently check NATS's findings and examine its resilience investment plans. The review is due within six months. 🛫
