Oman used the Indian rupee as its official currency and legal tender until the late 1950s and early 1960s. Following the rise of gold smuggling, the Reserve Bank of India introduced the specialized " Gulf Rupee" (issued by the RBI) in 1959 to replace the standard Indian rupee in Gulf nations including Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the Trucial States (now UAE).
