The U.S. military said it struck a low-profile vessel on an eastern-Pacific drug-trafficking route on 23 August, killing two people. U.S. Southern Command said its intelligence showed the vessel was involved in trafficking, but released no supporting evidence. 🚤
The strike was carried out by Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere under Southern Command, which oversees U.S. military operations and security cooperation across Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Guardian reported that it was the 67th strike in the administration’s nearly year-long campaign against alleged drug boats, bringing the reported death toll to 223. The command says the campaign has destroyed 64 speedboats, three low-profile vessels and one semisubmersible craft.
The campaign faces continuing questions over legal authority, target identification and rescue outcomes. Southern Command said there had been more than 20 search-and-rescue efforts, while the reported tally cited 28 survivors and three rescues. ⚖️
