travelling with a dog I adopted with my late girlfriend…

travelling with a dog I adopted with my late girlfriend, how do people make this work?

I’ve spent years travelling, working remotely, and moving between countries it's just one of the things I love about this lifestyle is being able to decide where I want to go next without having to build my entire life around one place

But recently, travelling has become a little different for me

My girlfriend and I decided to stop wandering and rented a cozy apartment in our hometown, we still frequented travels but not as much, we even adopted a dog together and after she passed away, I found it difficult to imagine staying in the same city, surrounded by the same memories and at the same time, I couldn’t imagine leaving our dog behind too, she’s family, and taking care of her became my responsibility

so naturally I started figuring out how to make the digital nomad lifestyle work with a pet and it’s been a learning experience, to say the least

and when you’re travelling alone, you can book a cheap flight, find a hostel, and figure out the rest as you go but with a dog, almost every decision requires a little more planning and my travels aren’t as random and quick too

not every airline accepts pets, accommodation options become more limited, and international travel can involve a surprising amount of paperwork and you also gotta think about the neighbourhood you’re staying in, nearby parks, access to vets, and whether your dog will actually be comfortable in a new environment

I’ve realised that being able to work from anywhere doesn’t mean that everywhere works for both of us

I’m also trying to be smarter about how I plan trips, which I never tried before like I look into pet-friendly accommodation through platforms like Airbnb and sometimes consider reaching out to hostels directly through Hostelworld to ask about their policies. Google Maps helps me check out nearby parks, vets and cafés, while BringFido is another useful place to look for dog-friendly spots. tbh i never used to rely on any of this, i believed in experiencing local lifestyle without leaning on digital tools, but she’s changed how i plan. biggest trouble so far was limiting my commutes and duration so she could adjust and am taking more water or train routes across europe so I can keep her with me and when I must fly I use google flights or Riftco to help me find cheap flights close by

One thing I’m learning is that staying somewhere for a month or two can make much more sense than constantly moving as It gives her time to settle into a routine, and it makes my own life a lot easier, too

But the best part is having some consistency in a lifestyle that’s otherwise pretty unpredictable. New countries, unfamiliar places, constantly changing routines and having a companion through all of it makes the experience feel a little less transient

I’m still figuring out the balance between exploring new places and making sure this lifestyle is genuinely good for her

For those of you who are digital nomads with dogs please help me with:
How do you decide which countries are worth travelling to with your pet? and are there particular apps or websites you rely on for finding genuinely pet-friendly accommodation and cafés? also how do you manage international flights and paperwork, especially with a medium or large dog?

I’d love to hear what’s worked for you, what hasn’t, and whether you prefer travelling between countries or keeping a home base and taking shorter trips.

I’m sure there are things I haven’t even considered yet, so any practical advice would be appreciated. Thank you .
