My best friend is great 1-on-1 but meaner to me in public, Am I expecting too much?
We've been friends for almost a year. I met her when I was at my lowest and got attached quickly. I also made real mistakes with her boundaries early on, which I fully acknowledge. She's still cautious because of that, and I respect it.
But here's the thing:
1-on-1, we're great. We've spent hours together, talked about all kinds of things, etc. I realize the closeness I felt might not have been completely reciprocal, and I'm okay with that.
She was always dismissive in handling my vulnerability. It's okay, I swallowed the hurt and moved on. We've had many arguments, but we'd always end up hanging out again. That made me feel like our friendship was resilient and that I matter to her despite everything.
In groups, she's noticeably meaner to me.. Meanwhile, I see a much softer and more affectionate version of her with the rest of the group.
I've tried bringing this up, but I get shut down.
I'm pulling away now, even though what I really want is for her to hear my side and genuinely want to repair things.
How long am I supposed to keep paying for my past mistakes? Am I supposed to keep enduring the pain of seeing how differently she treats other people compared to me?
