🌋 Anak Krakatau’s ash cloud forced Indonesia to suspend operations at eight airports on 6 September, including Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
The eruption sent ash into western Indonesian airspace. Authorities said volcanic ash can damage aircraft engines, turbine blades, fuel and air systems, and windscreens.
Early transport-ministry figures put the disruption at 209 flights and more than 22,000 passengers, with routes involving Singapore, Doha, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur affected. Later Associated Press reporting said 1,558 cancelled flights had affected 170,000 passengers.
✈️ The volcano lies in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra and grew within the caldera left by Krakatau’s 1883 eruption. Officials continued monitoring ash and flight operations as airports prepared to resume services when conditions allowed.
