My partner and I will have two extra days this weekend to hike after a family member’s wedding. We are from Ohio and have mainly hiked on the east coast including the Smokies.
I’ve been looking into Arapaho National Forest and the other national forests in the area over the national park because I don’t trust that it won’t be packed.
My partner and I are pretty fit and regularly run and hike. We’ve done multiple backpacking trips with 8-15 mile a day expectations. But neither of us have ever hiked in the Rockies so I think a 5 mile maximum is a safe call depending on elevation change during the hike. We know to expect to start early to avoid storms and have our layers already picked out and ready.
We would like to avoid packed trails if possible, but I’m not sure if that’s a realistic expectation.
All of this to say, I’d appreciate some genuine recommendations on trails that are generally less busy but do have gems on them in terms of sights, lakes, or waterfalls. I’m especially interested in Arapaho National Forest but we are open to any recommendations outside the national park.
