2000s Spider-Man’s Mary Jane is not as toxic as everyone thinks
Ok so I know this is an incredibly unpopular opinion, however my point is still valid I think. I’ve heard MJ hate for as long as I can remember, especially this MJ that most of us know from our childhoods. I recently rewatched the OG trilogy and was actually shocked. Who I saw was so much different than what I see on the internet.
In the first movie, Peter saw himself as a typical nice guy who doesn’t get noticed. Then he got his powers and, both as Peter and Spider-man, he got MJ’s attention. Let’s break down what we know about her at this point: \*she has an abusive father \*she went out with Flash who was portrayed as a rich kid, to maybe feel like she can get away from her family in the future with him; breaks up with him at graduation, when he’s acting toxic towards her and she can’t stand it \*then Harry asks her out and he seems kind, smart and generous, so a different world than what she’s used to
Then Harry acts out on the balcony, claiming her dress is too inappropriate for him to introduce her to his father and she’s understandably uncomfortable with that. At this point we have our first spider-man vs green goblin fight, and she’s rescued. Later she’s saved by him again (if I’m not mistaken right after Harry degraded her to his father and everyone heard) and she kisses the hero to thank him
\*then comes her crush on spider-man, as every other guy she trusted in basically ended up degrading her, and spidey was the only heroic person. At this point she gets closer to Peter as well
Then the Goblin kidnaps her and she’s barely saved by Spider-man, who then fights with goblin, we know how that ends.
\*at Norman’s funeral (weird place but ok) she realizes that Peter is the one that has always been there for her, and he’s not some unattainable hero (at least that’s what she thinks), and he’s the one that can make her feel feel happy and safe. At this point it’s **Peter who turns her down**, because he’s scared his enemies can find out about his weakness (her).
At this point, in the first movie, I cannot blame her for any decision she made, especially taking into account the fact that she was a teenager from an abusive home.
Then comes the second movie, where Peter is still doing this push-pull thing to her. I know in this movie he’s trying to balance his love for MJ with the obligation he feels towards his Spider-Man duty. She’s willing to hear him out and get her hopes up (while being with JJJ’s son, she is wrong for the emotional betrayal thought), and even break up with her boyfriend slash fiancé for Peter, but his inability to make a decision drove her to the engagement.
Finally, she finds out that he’s the Spider-man, which makes everything about Peter’s behavior clear and she’s able to forgive him and ultimately leave a man at the altar for Peter, accepting everything that comes with that relationship.
In the third movie, she was dealing with a lot of issues. First she got that awful review from critics, and when she tried to talk to Peter about it, he just kept bringing up Spider-man, and how he always faces criticism (very boastfully if I may add). Then when she got fired, she couldn’t tell Peter about it because he was still talking about himself and couldn’t really hear what she was trying to say.
Moreover, he KISSED GWEN STACY in public, in the way they had their first kiss!!! Like what was that??? That’s when she turned to Harry, who was there for her. When he kissed her, she set a boundary and didn’t allow it to continue. She subsequently broke up with Peter under threat of Goblin Junior when he got his memories back, which I feel that people forget. Then came the Venom-Peter, who went out with Gwen just to get his revenge on MJ for breaking his heart. In the end it all made sense and everything became clear, but it didn’t feel like they were going to go back to each other (GOOD).
Ending this rant, I feel like MJ is severely misjudged and underrated in these movies. Let me know you opinions though if you disagree. #conversation source
