Unpaid partnership and paying for my own design
Hi.
I’m kind of curious to see your opinions on this.
I make a living as a graphic designer, however I do some pro bono work for this sports association from time to time. Been doing so for a few months now; it’s a fairly new partnership.
Meaning I work for free; I don’t mind since I like what they do (lots of charity events, fundraisers for anti-cancer work etc.)
I designed some new merch for them not long ago. I asked for one shirt since I liked how they turned out. Agreed.
Merch just came out of print and now they’re asking me to pay for that shirt whenever we meet next. Ok.
However, I’ve had both a fellow designer and my former mentor tell me that they’re ”pulling a dick move” since I work for free and they’re essentially asking me to pay for my own work. Apparently I’m not supposed to pay for that at all, but should receive a complimentary item.
It’s not a huge sum, and there are the material costs etc. so I don’t mind at all. Plus I like to support important work and I’d feel like a complete Karen if I asked them to just give it for free.
Our dealings are very informal, and I never ask any of my clients for any copies of whatever I make for them; I have my portfolio. If they CHOOSE to send me whatever, cool. If not, also cool.
My colleagues seem very adamant that they’re in the wrong for asking me to pay.
What’s your take on this?
