Popocatépetl is Mexico's most dangerous active volcano and millions of people have been warned to prepare for a possible evacuation.
The alert level for the volcano has been raised to "yellow phase 3", which is just below the "red" alarm level.
The volcano is located about 45 miles southeast of Mexico City and some 25 million people live in a 60-mile radius of it. The volcanic activity has delayed flights in Mexico City and closed schools in several nearby towns.
