“Tourist Go Home” in Barcelona- thoughts?
I recently returned back home (NYC) from a trip to Barcelona and can’t stop thinking about all of the “Tourist Go Home” tags and posters all over the city. Though I spent some time in the tourist-heavy areas, I noticed these signs even in locations far from La Rambla/El Raval/El Born. I experienced a similar campaign in Porto and Lisbon when I visited a few years ago.
I like to think of myself as a “good” tourist who truly wants to learn about a city or country’s culture and local people when I travel. I try to stay in hotels outside of the main areas, patronize local small businesses, and generally not act like a drunk asshole on spring break.
Coming from New York, which gets 6-7 times more tourists annually than Barcelona, I don’t think I’ve ever seen any blatant (public) anti-tourist graffiti or posters, even in Times Square. It’s also possible that I just don’t notice them.
How do the “Tourist Go Home” signs (and similar campaigns in other cities) make people feel? Why are they more prominent in some places rather than others? And a much deeper question, how can local governments and tourists alike help alleviate some of this anti-tourist sentiment?
