I had to look up the definition of a latchkey kid, it’s a kid who returns from school to an empty house as both parents are at work or it’s a single parent household who’s at work. Kid has to fend for themselves.
Now my question is, I started leaving my children at ages 11 & 12 home alone for an hour to hour and a half while I finished my shift. They would come home and make snacks, watch TV or do homework until I got home.
Is that a latchkey kid??
Every time I see the term latchkey kid it’s always used in a negative sense often attached to some trauma. However in real life our kids get old enough eventually to start being trusted at home alone to fend for themselves for a few hours. My kids are now 15 and 16 and they will spend the summer days basically coming and going as long as I know the plan. For example ;Going to skateboard into town to chill with friends and be back by 7pm.
There have been times where we had to travel for the day for the 15 year olds sports and my 16 year old wanted to stay behind but was alone all day / into the evening.
Where we live after care programs age out by the end of 5th grade so these kids are often in a sport until parents get them, or home until parents get home.
Is this not the same thing as latchkey and is latchkey always something that’s truly negative? #relationships source
