When planning for my first hiking trip with long difficult hikes in warm weather, I was researching electrolyte supplement options. I bought some salt tabs online and trialed them on some training hikes. Did the math to figure out how many tabs I needed to take and realized it’s a massive amount, like a dozen tabs in a hike if I want to actually reasonably keep up with losses. Worked out to like $5 even for basic training hikes. Gummies have even less electrolyte content and cost more.
As a cyclist also, I have tried several brands of electrolyte + high calorie drink mixes. It’s so annoying to deal with measuring it out and cleaning everything after, and all my squirt bottles now smell like fake flavoring. So no thanks for hiking.
Looked up high salt snack foods, bought a jar of pickles for like $2 and packed a few pickles for each hike. Usually in a small container inside a ziploc so nothing leaks. Who doesn’t like pickles right? It was delicious and I only needed to eat maybe 3-5 on the whole hike. Some nuts/seeds for magnesium and I’m golden.
I keep seeing posts discussing costly electrolyte solutions and tabs and gummies and I barely ever see any real food mentioned.
Is this just Big Supplement advertising success? Why would you spend hundreds of dollars on electrolyte supplements when you can just eat some pickles or olives?
This is basically just a rant, but maybe it’ll help someone who doesn’t have a lot of money to spend on supplements still get their proper nutrition to have a more enjoyable time hiking. #activity #hiking source
