The Trump administration has filed a proposal to rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which restricts road building, timber harvesting and other development in designated national-forest areas. 🌲

The U.S. Forest Service says the rule has limited local managers’ ability to address wildfire risk, insects and disease. The agency says the change would not itself authorize any particular road or logging project.

The proposal concerns about 44.7 million acres covered by the nationwide rule. Separate roadless rules in Idaho and Colorado would remain in place, while the Tongass National Forest would be excluded from the 2001 rule. 🗺️

Environmental groups say lifting the nationwide protections could affect old-growth forests, wildlife, water supplies and recreation. They also dispute that rescission is needed for targeted wildfire work.

The proposal proceeds through environmental review and public comment. Any future site-specific project would still require planning and environmental analysis under applicable law. ⚖️
