Round-trip Roadtrip - Louisiana to the Rockies and back
Hey yall, my boyfriend and I are planning a two week trip from Louisiana to New Mexico and Colorado this summer. I'm looking for any tips, recommendations, must do's (or not to do's), etc. This is my first time that far west and I'm psyched to see a landscape so different from south Louisiana.
Now I know Texas and New Mexico in early August are going to be hot as hell and much drier than what we're used to. I plan on staying well hydrated and taking our time. Also, we live near sea level and will be heading into the Rocky Mountains, so how the elevation effects us is something we're taking into consideration - but is altitude sickness actually that common?
We're also bringing our 20lb dog with us. He travels well but this is definitely the longest journey he's been on. We've scouted out a few dog friendly campgrounds and hotels along the way, but we're open to recommendations. We know we might need to keep him in AC during the heat of the day in some places. If you know of any dog friendly stops, restaurants, tourist attractions along the way, and especially any dog friendly hiking trails outside Rocky Mountain NP, let me know.
A rough outline of our itinerary:
Day 1: Baton Rouge -> San Antonio
Day 2: San Antonio -> Balmorhea State Park
Day 3: Balmorhea -> White Sands NP
Day 4: White Sands -> Santa Fe
Day 5: Santa Fe
Day 6: Santa Fe -> Colorado Springs
Day 7: Colorado Springs
Day 8: Colorado Springs -> Rocky Mountain NP
Day 9: Rocky Mountain NP
Day 10: Rocky Mountain NP -> somewhere in the middle of Kansas
Day 11: -> Kansas City
Day 12: Kansas City -> St Louis
Day 13: St Louis
Day 14: St Louis -> Baton Rouge
We plan on trying to get through Texas as quickly as possible, with only a few detours. Opting to spend more time in New Mexico and Colorado; visit parks, explore the towns, enjoy the landscape. Then we want to hightail it across Kansas and Missouri to go visit family in St Louis before heading home. Or, option 2, we cut down to Arkansas from KC and take our time through the Ozarks on our way home.
This is the biggest roadtrip we've planned and the first long one with our dog. Any apps you can't live without on trips or things to help keep yourself organized? We're open to recommendations and suggestions on the route and detours along the way...I would love to see at least one "world's largest \_\_\_\_". I know we might be insane for going to the southwest in August, but we're excited! #activities #travel source
