Van der Vaart: "Everyone uses this word, but if I say it on TV, I get canceled"
Rafael van der Vaart is greatly annoyed by the 'hypocrisy' on English television. The former midfielder believes that there is a double standard in the United Kingdom.
Van der Vaart was a guest on Monday evening’s Rondo on Ziggo Sport, where the red card given to Jude Bellingham against Osasuna was discussed. The Real Madrid midfielder was sent off for remarks made to the referee.
It seems that referee José Munuera Montero thought Bellingham said "fuck you" to him, while the Real Madrid midfielder insists he said "fuck off."
Van der Vaart reacts to Bellingham’s red card. "What really annoys me in England is: everyone talks with 'fuck this', 'fuck that', but if I say that on television, I get canceled." Host Wytse van der Goot points out that Van der Vaart recently used the word on Sky. "Yes," Van der Vaart responds.
"I'm not saying that I've been canceled, I can still go there, but it's just so hypocritical," says Van der Vaart. "Everyone talks like that. It's not polite, but it's almost like 'thank you'. Seriously, especially in England."
Van der Vaart finds the red card for Bellingham ridiculous. "I think 'fuck off' can be said in an emotional moment. It’s normal language on a field, even in his own country. I do think there's quite a difference between saying 'fuck off' and 'fuck you.'"
Marco van Basten also believes Bellingham should never have been given a red card. "I think the red card is exaggerated and really stupid. To get a red card, you should do much more crazy stuff. A yellow card is enough," says Van Basten.
Mark van Bommel, who was also a guest, fears that Bellingham will still be suspended. "A lip reader needs to be involved here, but a referee will always win this. It doesn’t have to be this way, but the federation cannot go against a referee."
