Please share A letter from an Egyptian woman, a former Muslim and also a former Christian. I am a Muslim by birth. I left Islam after studying all its sects, then converted to Christianity, and subsequently left it as well.
I will explain to you my life in Egypt, what the Coptic Church is, and who the Copts are across all their denominations. They reject anyone from a Muslim background. When a Christian from a Muslim background approaches them, the priests report them. Leaving one's religion is considered apostasy—a crime in the Islamic world, including Egypt—and this is also how most Copts behave in reality. You will hear about a very strange kind of Christianity. The most important text for the Copts is the one where Jesus talks about "the wisdom of serpents." They interpret handing over new Christians and informing their families as a form of this "wisdom of serpents."
Last year, before leaving Christianity, I was at a church, and a friend of mine—a Copt, but a rare case who loves evangelism and new Christians—told me that her friend, a new Christian, asked a priest in her village for baptism. He expelled her and informed her father that she had left Islam and wanted to be baptized, which led her father to burn her alive. These behaviors are not new; 17 years ago, a bishop in northern Egypt established communication groups to reach out to new Christians and hand them over to the police.
The Copts differ from Catholics, who launched the Crusades, and from Evangelicals and resistance theology. In all their denominations, the Copts sanctify the text "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's." They argue that this means they must hand over new Christians to the police because the state demands it, and that they must submit to the state even if it persecutes them. In 2011, the Egyptian army ran over Copts; you cannot imagine, Copts turned out by the millions to salute the army. They say that evangelism is not important and their rights are not important. The most important thing is that the rulers apply "love your enemy" and "whoever slaps you on your right cheek" as a constitution with Muslims and Islamic states.
They hate Western civilization and Western Christians, and they believe that the global Holocaust was a punishment for the crucifixion of Jesus. When we tell them, "You are masochists and subservient to Muslims," they are shocked. The teachings of Jesus appear highly masochistic, and the proof is the submissive manner in which they live. They say that even if the government burns our churches and annihilates us, we must not rebel against it or start a revolution. Yet, in their prayers, they themselves curse the United States and other Christian denominations
