Got into this stuff because I was lonely after my best friend left. Anyone else find this hobby a similar way?
Started taking backpacking and gear more seriously right after my closest friend joined the military. Needed a reason to leave the house and somehow ended up deep in base weight spreadsheets a few months later.
The thing that's actually pulled me in beyond the gear is the culture, trail names, the shared language, the way this community talks about the trail like it's a living thing. I want to actually be part of that, not just optimize my pack weight in isolation.
Anyone else fall into this hobby for a similar reason? And for those of you with trail names. How'd you get yours, and does it actually feel earned or does it just kind of happen?
