Camp Century was presented as Arctic research while the U.S. tested a plan to hide 600 nuclear missiles beneath Greenland
Camp Century was publicly promoted as a scientific research station, but declassified records later revealed that the U.S. Army was also using it to test whether a much larger underground missile network could operate beneath Greenland’s ice.
Project Iceworm proposed hiding up to 600 mobile nuclear missiles inside thousands of kilometres of tunnels. The full system was never built because the moving ice gradually warped and crushed the experimental base.
