Can a job unwillingly put you on medical leave?

If you want more info, you can look at my post history.
Basically, on Sunday, one of my jobs put me on temporary medical leave. I agree with it, I'm going to follow through with it, but just wondering the legality of such. The owner's husband is a lawyer, so it seems like they'd do everything above the board, but I saw my psychiatrist today and she was sure it wasn't legal and that medical leave had to be started and approved by a doctor.
