I inherited a small backyard pond from the previous owners of my home. My first year in charge of it hasnt gone great. Wasnt able to stay on top of the algea, which resulted in a premium mosquito destination resort.
I don't personally get a ton of satisfaction from the pond itself, but it has a small fountain that I like (and so do the local bees/birds).
I'm wondering if it's possible to convert the pond to a bog garden and retain the fountain. The pond is a bit over a foot deep. I'm thinking I would use gravel and a milk crate to make a sump for the pump about 7 in deep. The idea would be this stays basically flooded to feed the fountain. Above that would be soil/plants. Probably have a gravel "stream" to help ensure water from the fountain gets back to the sump in a reasonable amount of time.
Would love feedback on if this could work, and any suggestions for how to build it (soil type, plants, etc). I'm in Seattle (Zone 9a). The spot is more shady than not but does get some sun. #activity source
