🗳️ Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, narrowly defeating Representative Haley Stevens in the August 4 primary. The Associated Press declared him the winner on August 5 after updated returns showed Stevens could not overtake him.
El-Sayed led by 14,893 votes—just under 1 percentage point—with more than 1.5 million ballots counted. The Democratic Senate primary’s turnout exceeded Michigan’s 2020 Democratic Senate primary and its 2018 Democratic gubernatorial primary.
The former Detroit and Wayne County public-health official ran as an anti-establishment progressive, backing Medicare for All, campaign-finance reform and an end to U.S. military aid to Israel. Groups supporting Stevens spent more than $50 million during the contest, according to AP. 📊
El-Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers, who was unopposed for his party’s nomination, in November. The race is for the seat being vacated by Senator Gary Peters and is expected to be important to control of the Senate.
