Anyone in serious desert heat growing herbs in containers…

Anyone in serious desert heat growing herbs in containers through the whole summer?

I’m in Henderson and my “homestead” is currently a second floor balcony, so obviously I’m working on a very small scale lol. But I grow as much of my own food as the space will let me.

Herbs are what I use the most because I cook for a living and I hate buying those little grocery store packs just to use half of them. Spring is easy. Basil, parsley, thyme, chives, everything looks great. Then July shows up and my balcony turns into an oven.

Last summer I lost most of my basil and parsley even with afternoon shade. The pots themselves were getting ridiculously hot, so this year I switched from black plastic to lighter colored containers and moved everything I could away from the wall. It helped, but once we get those stretches over 105-110, I’m basically just trying to keep things alive.

I see people homesteading in Arizona, Nevada and other really hot places with productive gardens, so clearly there are better ways to handle this than what I’m doing.

For those of you growing food in desert heat, what herbs actually make it through July and August for you? I’m especially curious about varieties that can take the heat rather than just ways to shade and water them constantly.

Eventually I’d love to have an actual yard to work with, but for now I’m trying to learn what I can with my little balcony setup.
