How We Are Here: Life before it is Explained, a non-doctrinal philosophy book and contemplative website
Hello everyone. I’m H.T. Pollmann, the author of How We Are Here: Life before it is Explained, and I’ve made the complete digital book freely available.
The book is a companion for everyday life, something to keep nearby and return to whenever life feels difficult or the mind becomes heavy. Sometimes a few pages, or even a few lines, may create enough space around what is happening for the mind’s grip to loosen and a little peace to return, even before the problem itself has been solved.
At its centre is a simple possibility: before life is explained by the mind and becomes our story, something is already here. Life itself. The work explores whether becoming more aware of that life can help us meet ourselves, other people and difficult circumstances with less internal struggle and greater peace.
The website https://howwearehere.org/ is wider than the book itself. It is a growing, non-doctrinal space for people who find themselves asking deeper questions about life, meaning and their own existence, but who may not want another belief system or spiritual explanation.
Currently included on the webpage:
* The complete book, available to read online or download as EPUB or PDF * Meditation and reflection experiences in which passages from the book unfold slowly against changing landscapes * A section for existential questions such as “Why am I here?”, “Why do I care what others think?” and “Why does something still feel missing?”, with links to the places where the book explores them * Articles examining spiritual and existential subjects without asking the reader to accept a doctrine * IBIS, an AI companion currently in development, intended to offer a calm place to explore ordinary concerns, difficult emotions, relationships, meaning and belief
*How We Are Here* is offered freely because access to the work should not depend on someone’s ability to pay. If you explore the website or read some of the book, I would genuinely appreciate hearing what speaks to you, what doesn’t, or what questions it leaves you with. #entertainment
