How do you guys find the balance between guiding and forcing?
My son is 11 and begged to play basketball 4 years ago. Over the last year or so, the teams have become more competitive and high level. He loves the practices but has stated he doesn’t enjoy the games because his team loses very often. He also tends to avoid hard work like the plague, and it’s hard work to get better at a sport.
I gave him the option of quitting this year and he took a few days to think before ultimately deciding to play again this year. We are beginning a camp and regular off season practices to try and improve the team and he’s dreading it. However, we have to stick to it because he CHOSE to and I don’t want to show him that it’s okay to quit just because things are hard but at what point is it forcing him to do it? I dont want to be that parent who forces her kid to do a sport or activity they don’t enjoy and end up resentful but I also really just don’t want my kid to give up so easily. It’s such a difficult line to toe. #relationships source
