More so need to vent to people other than my family and friends because I feel like I’m going insane and can’t tell if I’m part of the problem and everyone is just siding with me.
I started a new job two months ago today. I have a supervisor who I report directly to, but there is a director of the department who I speak to regularly. The director interviewed and hired me, and it’s important to note my supervisor was never present in any of the three interviews.
I start the job and learn pretty early on my supervisor has his quirks. The director pulled me into her office very early on and told me I need to manage up (as in manage my supervisor), and I was hired for the job because they think I’d be good at it. I felt mislead because I had no idea I was getting hired to manage a manager.
I also learned pretty early on there’s no structure and no one is on the same page when it comes to my portfolio. I’m not doing much work on my own either. I eventually asked my supervisor, recently might I add, what tasks he wants me to take over and he couldn’t give me a concrete answer. We meet everyday for a “check in,” but these meetings often last HOURS and it’s really just me watching him do work. There has been little formal training, and the hours we spend together make me feel insane because I’m really not gaining anything, and eventually I check out mentally. We’ve had check ins last 3+ hours. He also doesn’t respect my time and frequently keeps me past 5pm or allows our meetings to go into my lunch time. I have mentioned my concerns to him and the director, but there has been no real change and the problems persist. It seems like everyone else in the office is aware of his work style and understands my frustrations, which is honestly even more frustrating because I feel like I walked into a environment I was completely unaware of while everyone sits back and feels bad for me. Today I took a mental health day because yesterday was beyond frustrating for me and I almost left in tears. I’m starting to become resentful - yesterday at 5:10, after being on a Teams call with him for an hour and a half, I said I had to go and hung up the call without him really answering. He mentioned before I hung up that he is aware it’s past 5pm (my working hours), and he wanted to be respectful of my end time, but he proceeds to talk and not end the call. I was beyond frustrated.
At this point I’m really unhappy and leaning towards looking for something else. But I would love to hear an outsiders perspective because it is only two months in. #business source
