How do I stop being dry in conversations

I feel like there’s been a gap in the development of my social skills. About a year ago, at 15,I realised that most people in school talk to whoever they sit next to or work with, even if they aren’t already friends. I never saw a need to and it I’ve always been okay sitting in silence for hours, but because of this I’ve gained a reputation as an incredibly dry person.

I get anxious talking to people I’m not close with, and even with friends I struggle to think of things to say for an extended period of time. I’ve been trying to put in effort this past year, but conversations often feel boring or forced.

One friend jokes that I “don’t speak,” and sometimes when I’m the only one making plans, people cancel — which makes me worry that I’m just not that interesting to hang out with.

I feel like others are more lively than me which makes them more fun overall but being lively doesn’t come naturally to me, I can’t naturally joke around unless I am in an incredibly good mood.

I’ve always done well in sports and academically, so I never really had to put much effort into making friends when I was younger and I think that might be part of it.

I don’t even think the issue is with my friends as I just feel myself to be boring and uninteresting to everyone despite having a decent amount of hobbies.

I just want to get better at conversations and make friends who actually enjoy spending time with me.
