When tight deadlines mean you get stuff past the censors…

When tight deadlines mean you get stuff past the censors by complete accident.

When Jim Steranko drew *Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.* \#2, he included a page that had a final panel showing Fury and Contessa in a torrid embrace, leaving what was about to happen implied but obvious. Since this was 1968 and the Comics Code Authority was still a thing that mattered, the CCA told Marvel that this was unacceptable and demanded that the page be altered before they would allow it to be published. Roy Thomas, the editor, didn't have time to get Steranko or another artist to draw a new final panel, so he quickly pasted in a photostat of Fury's gun in its holster from the first panel, thinking it would make a decent bookend.

Somehow, Thomas missed the potential visual innuendo of a holster with a gun in it, and so did the Code, since the comic was approved for printing. He only realized that he was involved in one of the most infamous cases of censorship backfiring (right up there with that time Cloverway's attempts to censor a same-sex couple unintentionally resulted in two characters coming across as incestuous closet cases) when Steranko gave him a phone call, laughing his ass off and thanking him for making the scene even *more* suggestive.
