How to eat with someone across the table? I find it…

How to eat with someone across the table?

I find it soul-crushing and awkward whenever I'm eating out at a restaurant or cafe with one person. It became more apparent yesterday when I invited a friend out to eat at a fast-food chain. We sat across from each other, and we waited for our orders. It felt awkward since I realized how intimate it felt and looked (maybe because I encountered my hs friends eating, so I was subconsciously thinking about how we looked). And during the whole dinner, I genuinely didn't know how to act.

I felt that my posture was bad, but I didn't change it 'cause people might notice me changing my posture.

It also felt awkward when I was biting down on my food; I didn't know where to look, so I just feasted upon my food, looking down at the table and floor.

I also felt "caged" during the whole moment; I felt scared to look around, so I didn't know where to look when there was a pause in our conversation.

And even though I wanted to use the restroom, I didn't go 'cause the guy I'm with kept talking (but looking back at it now, I should've gone to the restroom when we were about to leave).

For context: I'm not like this when I eat out by myself, and in groups, I still feel like this, but on a lower scale. I also find it much better and more comfortable to eat with someone when we're sitting beside each other. Anyway, I could use advice during situations like these, since I've felt this way for a long time.
