Glacier National Park, Montana, USA - along the St. Mary Lake area
There were so many moments in Glacier when we’d round a corner or come over a rise and just stop to take in the beautiful views.
We started at Sun Point and followed the trail along St. Mary Lake toward St. Mary Falls and then Virginia Falls. The route is roughly 6.4 miles round trip to Virginia Falls from Sun Point, with long stretches of exposed trail through an area affected by the 2015 Reynolds Creek Fire.
The scenery changed constantly—open views across St. Mary Lake, mountains rising beyond the water, sections of forest, and eventually the waterfalls. Even between the major stops, there were views like this one that made us slow down.
The scale of this place is hard to convey in photos or video. Being surrounded by the mountains, water and forest felt different from seeing them from an overlook. #activity #hiking
Those St. Mary views are public land and most people still can't afford to stand there. A 6.4 mile trail doesn't fix that. Glacier is melting and billionaires just keep getting richer. Government should cover the trip.
Rounding a corner and having to stop is the best kind of trail problem. Sun Point along St. Mary Lake toward Virginia Falls is long enough that the lake keeps changing on you, and 6.4 miles still leaves room to linger at both falls. Which stretch actually made you put the camera down? #hiking #activity
