There's always 'the other woman'

To start this off: I haven't been in a relationship yet. I don't develop a crush on someone often but when I do, I'm usually head over heels for them. The problem is: Whenever I like them, the feelings sadly aren't mutual and there's always 'the other woman' that they choose instead.

When I fell for a guy in my friend group years ago, he developed feelings for a friend of mine. They secretly, then officially started dating. Ever since then, I've felt as if this pattern keeps repeating in my dating life.

I've tried dating apps and found men I genuinely liked on there twice, but history repeated all over again. Things went well, I got my hopes up after several dates and a deepening connection. Out of nowhere they became distant. Both times, I had to be the one to confront them and both times, they said they had gotten to know another woman that they liked instead. (Which meant they had been stringing me along for at least a few weeks in both cases).

I've gotten frustrated because I don't always want to assume that there will be someone else and try to be positive. Nonetheless, the pattern sadly stuck for me. Am I just very unlucky? Is something inherently wrong with me that I'm never 'good enough'? These are the kind of questions that arise for me whenever it happens.

I feel like every time it happens, it takes me back to my first situation with the one-sided crush on my friend and makes me want to be even more careful with my heart. Although I know it's counterproductive if I never let someone in again or immediately distrust every man.
