What is expected when I keep getting food gifts from my neighbors across the street?
What is expected when I keep getting food gifts from my neighbors across the street
We have relatively new neighbors(like 1 year living here or something) that live across from us. They are immigrants and speak neither the language of the country we live in nor English. They are the friendliest people ever, always smiling and waving.
They have recently started giving us home made treats which I absolutely love. But I have no clue on how to react other than smile and say thank you. I try to make absolutely clear I am grateful and I think that is definitely coming across, but I honestly don't know what else to do. I rarely bake. When I do bake I will definitely also send treats their way but the next time is probably like 6 weeks from now and it feels a bit lopsided now (with me being the one "taking advantage"). We did give them our national new years treat during the new year, but that was ages ago.
I am planning to gift them some of my pears that I'm growing when they are ready but that could take another couple of weeks.
Anyone got any advice on what they would expect? I dont know exactly where they are from. I think either Turkey or the middle east somewhere but I could definitelybe wrong. They definitely seem like good and super friendly people but there is a bit of a culture difference and a language barrier so I honestly don't know what is expected of me in this situation and how to react to them.
It started roughly when I tried to warn them about a military exercise happening in our area, I dont know if they are refugees coming from a war, but having soldiers potentially walk through our streets with guns and fake bombs going off in the distance while there are airplanes flying directly over our houses and dropping soldiers with parachutes in the fields could be really scary if you don't know what is going on, especially if you are fleeing a war. So I tried to mime them what would be happening, but I am not sure if they understood and I am afraid they might think I am a soldier (which I very much am not). What am I supposed to do now?
