Medals handed out for swimming at the Olympic Games are the most overvalued achievement in sports
Michael Phelps is often credited to be the “most successful Olympian” of all time because he has 28 medals (23 of them being gold). While I’m not saying that he wasn’t an extremely dominant athlete, this stuff is so padded. What other sport is there in the Olympics where you can do very similar things in multiple events in which a medal is awarded? He gets to swim 100 free, 200 free, 100 free but as part of a team and get 3 different gold medals?? That’s ridiculous. Another athlete who is extremely dominant in like tennis or golf for example only can accumulate a single medal at a games, and because of this restriction they are automatically thrown out of the conversation of dominance. There should be ONE medal for overall swimming excellence instead of handing these things out like candy at Halloween.
