I know this sounds controversial but my favourite comic book writer has to be Garth Ennis i think he is kinda misunderstood by a lot of comic fans as just an edgy guy that says swear words but he is much more than that, his comics if you look beyond the surface level actually do have a heart in them A lot of people read The Boys first and assume Ennis is fundamentally a nihilist. Preacher is one of the works that reveals he really isn't. Ennis is often cynical about institutions governments, churches, corporations, superheroes, armies but he's frequently idealistic about individuals. He tends to admire courage, loyalty, and personal integrity, and Preacher may be the clearest expression of that. as a long time fan of Ennis a would argue that the provocative jokes are the surface layer, while sincerity is the thing he keeps returning to. For example, in Punisher MAX, beneath all the brutality, there's a serious examination of violence, war, and the people caught in them. Stories like Born or The Slavers aren't really written as edgy comedies; they're angry, often tragic works. Similarly, Ennis's war comics such as Battlefields and War Stories are often surprisingly respectful and earnest. He clearly has a deep interest in courage, sacrifice, and human endurance.
What confuses people is that Ennis expresses sincerity in a very unusual way. He doesn't write like someone such as Neil Gaiman or Alan Moore. He rarely pauses for poetic reflection or philosophical monologues. Instead, he'll have pages of crude jokes and outrageous situations, then suddenly hit you with a completely genuine emotional moment. #entertainment source
