Once upon a time in a town called Free-Favorville, lived a guy named Bob the Yes-Man. Bob was so nice, if kindness were a currency, he'd be a billionaire, and broke at the same time.
Need a ride to the airport at 3 AM? " Sure, why not? "
Need help moving furniture? Bobβs in.
Want someone to listen to your five-hour rant about your ex who never even liked dogs? Bobβs your audience.
Forgot your wallet again for the fifth lunch in a row? " No worries, I got it⦠again ."
His house? Constantly full.
His fridge? Constantly empty.
His schedule? Written by everyone but him.
Bob's friends treated his place like a 24/7 open bar with free Wi-Fi. But then, plot twist, Bob saw something on Instagram, a party... hosted by his βfriends.β Everyone was there. Except Bob.
The caption? " So great to celebrate with our favorite people! "
Sam zoomed in. Nope. Definitely not there.
At first, Bob rationalized it. βMaybe they thought I was too busy helping Steve alphabetize his sock drawer!β
But then it clicked! Bob was everyoneβs go-to when in need, but no oneβs go-to when itβs fun. So, Bob had a moment. A real mirror-staring, microwave-staring, even-the-toaster-gets-it moment. He looked in the mirror and shouted βNOOOOOO!β
As from that day forward, Bob upgraded his vocabulary, he became Boundary Bob. π€
Now when someone says, β Can I crash at your place?β
He says, βOnly if you come with your own mattress, snacks, and a therapist.β π
When they say, β Can you help me move this weekend? β
He replies, βAbsolutely, if by help you mean cheering from a distance.β π
βCan you pick me up from the airport?β
βSorry, Iβve got plans, with my couch.β π
βWhy didnβt you come to our party?β
βI wasnβt invited. But I still celebrated, by not cleaning up after you.β π€£
Moral of the story.
Being nice is great. But if your kindness has you feeding 7 people, 2 dogs, and one emotional support without getting invited to karaoke night, itβs time to switch gears.
Say yes when it feels right, and say no when it saves your soul (and your snacks). π
